It’s fine if you have no idea what to send your email subscribers. The main thing is to start accumulating a list of subscribers and laying the groundwork as soon as possible.

ACTION STEP: CREATE AN EMAIL LIST

Start collecting addresses on your blog using Constant Contact or other email marketing services so that the list is ready for you as soon as you need it. It takes time to establish a substantial mailing list, so start now. Your future self will be grateful.

Even a simple opt-in in the sidebar of your site would suffice to get you started.

  • Books are excellent marketing tools. Your brand will get a lot of credibility as a result of this. However, there will be no effect on revenue.
  • Events – I despise events with all of my heart. All of the risk is borne up front; all contracts are signed in advance, they’re difficult to sell, and you don’t even know if you’ll make any money until the day of the event. Even if you do succeed, the profit margins are pitiful. These are full diversions for me, as well as a significant opportunity expense for the company.
  • Banner advertisements (for example, Google Ads, formerly Adsense) – It was around 2003 when these last made any money. I’m not sure it’s even viable to obtain banner ads to cover your hosting costs these days. I’m only half-joking here.
  • Speaking – When done correctly, speaking can be a powerful brand builder. And while getting paid $20,000 per speaking engagement sounds fantastic, it’s not nearly as exciting once you learn that most speakers are never paid, that creating a talk that commands that kind of fee takes months of work, that you really need a New York Times Bestseller to charge real fees, and that you’ll be sick of hotel rooms after the first year that you’ll never want to travel again. But don’t be discouraged by this. The most crucial thing is that you start blogging and creating your blog. If you stick to the system and do it regularly, you’ll find that success comes faster than you think.
